Many people have contracted COVID-19 without even knowing it. Many of the symptoms are similar to those of more common diseases, so it’s easy to mistake something else for COVID-19. If you think you might be dealing with COVID-19, here are some common signs of COVID-19 that you should look out for.

Early detection is key to ensuring you're able to treat COVID-19 successfully. The sooner you catch it, the chances are that your condition will be easier to manage, which means that you'll have less of a chance of experiencing severe complications.

Runny Nose, Congestion, and Sore Throat

Most people don't realize it, but cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1). And, contrary to popular belief, HSV1 doesn't just live in your mouth. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it can also live on other parts of your body—like your nose and throat—and can cause symptoms like runny nose, sore throat, and congestion. This is why if you're experiencing these symptoms during the cold season or after being exposed to someone with a cold sore, you should check for cold sores ASAP. While there's no cure for HSV1, you can take antiviral medications like acyclovir to ease symptoms until they go away on their own.

Reduced or Loss of Sense of Taste and Smell

If you've ever wondered why all your food tastes so bland or unappetizing, there could be a medical reason. Though not typical, loss of sense of taste and smell is one of many symptoms for COVID-19. If you're trying to lose weight and can't stomach anything, you may have already had COVID-19 without even knowing it. The sooner you get tested for it, the better. Get help today!

Reduced Appetite

If you're experiencing a loss of appetite or a drastic reduction in your ability to consume food, it could be an early sign of COVID-19. Keep in mind that temporary changes to eating habits are common after eating large meals or traveling for extended periods. However, if your appetite hasn't returned to normal after a few days, there may be something else going on. Although not typical, anorexia is a risk factor for COVID-19 and should be considered when dealing with unexpected changes in eating patterns. Suppose you find yourself unable to consume food or excessively hungry during certain times of day but only in very small amounts. In that case, you should seek medical attention immediately—this is a sign that something is wrong.

Breathlessness

Keep an eye out for shortness of breath, as that is one of COVID-19's biggest signs. Normally, you take about 12 breaths per minute, but your breathing rate will be faster if your body needs more oxygen than it can get because of COVID-19. If it gets really bad and you start to gasp for air or wake up gasping in pain, seek emergency medical help immediately. The sooner you get treatment and control over your breathing, the better chance you can recover and not suffer any long-term problems like pneumonia or other complications.

Tiredness and Fatigue

If you haven't been sleeping well or feeling tired and fatigued in your day-to-day life, it's possible that you may have already had COVID-19. Symptoms of narcolepsy and sleep apnea, such as daytime sleepiness and fatigue, can be confused with other disorders for a long time before they are actually recognized as COVID-19. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms without an apparent reason for them, you may talk to your doctor about COVID-19.
