Pandemic Strategy Adjustments

09/07/2021 11:06 PM

As we continue to navigate through this COVID-19 pandemic, one thing is certain to occur: constant changes to policies and protocols as new information is obtained about the virus. The emerging prevalence of the Delta variant is a prime example which has led to a recalibrating of our knowledge of the virus and how we must adjust our approach in order to contain it's spread and impact on the health of the public. The attached article highlights several key differences that have evolved with the Delta variant. In summary, symptoms that previously helped distinguish COVID infections from the common cold such as loss of smell and taste are not major symptoms of the Delta variant making it more difficult to distinguish clinically from the common cold and flu.

One constant that has persisted throughout the pandemic is the need for frequent ongoing COVID testing as a best practice of controlling the spread. Given the emergence of the Delta variant, which is presenting more like a common cold, the need for ongoing testing is even more important than ever to assure that individuals that are infected are identified and isolated in order to prevent further spread of the virus.
