How To Do A Rapid Covid 19 Test At Home With A Test Kit

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives and livelihoods of millions across the globe. Even now, as lockdowns are being lifted and restrictions are being eased, people are getting used to a new normal. While it might seem as though our fight against COVID-19 is drawing to a close, governments around the world are pondering on how best to deal with an endemic COVID-19. This entails achieving herd immunity through vaccination efforts and regular testing. Going to your healthcare provider at a hospital or even a clinic might not always be feasible which is why it is important to know how to do rapid COVID-19 tests at home.

What Is a Rapid COVID-19 Test?

A rapid test, also known as an antigen rapid test, is one of many possible COVID-19 tests available on the market. However, unlike most other tests (such as the PCR test), it is possible to conduct it at home by yourself. This test works by detecting the molecules present on the surface of the COVID-19 virus using a nasal or a throat swab. You will get your results within 30 minutes.

Should You Take a COVID-19 Test

If you are experiencing the common symptoms of COVID-19 including a fever, cough, runny nose, body aches, loss of smell etc., it might be prudent to get yourself tested or see a healthcare professional. Rapid antigen tests are available over the counter depending on where you stay but if you don’t mind waiting, a PCR test might be a tad more reliable. Alternatively, you may wish to get yourself tested if you know you have been in prolonged contact with someone who has been tested positive for COVID-19. Do note that the incubation period for the virus is between 2 to 14 days so you may get a false-negative test result even if you are later tested positive.

What You Will Need for a Rapid COVID-19 Test at Home

Before taking the test, it is important to read the instructions carefully so you know the sequence of events in advance and can prepare accordingly. Most tests require that you refrain from eating for 30 minutes prior to the test. Although the contents of a test kit may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, generally they contain a swab (for nasal collection), a tube (for putting your sample), extraction buffer and the test strip. Some test kits come equipped with a waste bag.

What Are the Steps Involved for Test Taking?

  • Pour the extraction buffer into the tube and store securely

  • Sanitize your hands and blow your nose

  • Insert the swab into your nostril making 10 complete circles. Do the same for both nostrils. Ensure that the tip does not touch anything else except the area where you’re collecting samples.

  • Press the tip of the swab at the edge of the tube while rolling for 15 seconds

  • Squeeze two drops of fluid on the test strip and wait for 30 minutes.

  • Read the attached manual to interpret the results of your test.
