Getting A Covid 19 Test For Your Child

By now, you must have experienced, firsthand, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. If not, you must have been personally acquainted with someone who has contracted it or is recovering from it. Maybe you have even read countless articles on the precautions to take, the types of vaccination available as well as your region’s COVID-19 protocols. Nothing, however, will quite prepare you for your child possibly getting infected. The anxiety and stress you are bound to feel as a parent can be minimized if you are aware of the myriad COVID-19 tests for children. This article aims to guide you through this challenging time by enabling you to provide the best possible care for your child.

Does your Child Have COVID-19?

Children are not known to have the strictest standards for hygiene. Thus, it might be difficult to know whether they are sick from COVID-19, the common flu, or some other ailment. This is compounded by the fact that the symptoms of these respiratory illnesses are common: coughing, body aches, a runny nose and high fever. Sometimes, however, children may show no symptoms of COVID-19, yet they might be carrying and spreading the virus to more vulnerable populations (consisting of older people and those with underlying comorbidities). Thus, the best way to safeguard against the spread and protect your child from COVID-19 complications is to undergo frequent testing. However, do note that it is best to check with your child’s pediatrician before any tests.

Antigen Test for Children

There are two main tests for children: the rapid antigen test and the PCR test. The rapid antigen test detects proteins produced by the virus. It is a relatively painless process: a nasal swab is taken at the front of the nose, not further up. This makes it much less uncomfortable and fit for children of any age and disposition. The benefit includes a rapid turnover time of less than half an hour. The caveat is that this method is not that sensitive and works best if COVID-19 has been contracted within the past week. A positive result usually indicates the presence of an active COVID-19 infection. However, don’t yet breathe a sigh of relief if the results are negative; false-negative results are common.

PCR Test for Children

This is where the PCR test is superior. It has been hailed as the gold standard, and for good reason. It not only detects current infections but infections at various stages. Like the antigen test, samples are collected via child-friendly nasal swabs or saliva samples. The downside, however, is that results take up to 48 hours which might be stressful for some parents. It is important to note that a positive result does not always mean that your child is sick at present.

What to Do if Your Child Has COVID-19?

Ideally, you should isolate your child from other household members and inform the relevant parties who have been in recent prolonged contact with your child, and keep them away from school. Do monitor your child’s health regularly and consult a healthcare professional if needed.
